Throughout early 1966 Chevy struggled over a name for its Mustang-killer. GM’s upper management was nervous about the aggressive undertones of the Panther name. A similar bout of cold feet would later trigger the Pontiac variation, code word the Banshee, to be renamed Firebird. Over its short lifetime, the F-car had been called by lots of names including Wildcat, Chaparral, Leader and Nova. It’s also reported that Chevy considered using the letters “GM” in the name, and developed G-Mini, which progressed into GeMini and lastly Gemini. Nevertheless, GM’s upper management vetoed the idea, fearing the car might be a failure.

Automotive legend has it that somebody at Chevrolet finally proposed the name Camaro and upper management quickly agreed. Although the name has no genuine significance, GM researchers supposedly discovered the word in a French dictionary as a slang term for “pal” or “buddy.” It’s rumored that Ford Motor Business researchers also discovered other meanings, including “a shrimp-like animal” and an arcane term for “loose bowels.”

Because a number or pre-launch products had already been launched utilizing the Panther name, Chevy’s most pressing difficulty was to now rename their new Mustang killer, the Camaro. Camaros are found in Central City PA  by looking for classic car dealers.

Once inside dealers in most city locations, purchasers were treated to not one but three Camaro models. Chevy made every effort to provide their biggest dealers with a base sport coupe, Camaro RS and a Camaro SS convertible. The method was an extension of the imaginative method used in Chevy’s nationwide advertisements which revealed all three Camaro models under a tag line, “How much Camaro you desire depends upon just how much driver you wish to be.”
